My paintings start with an itch. An image that feels wrong, overloaded, a little hostile. I paint from collages of images I have mined from my own archives as well as museum databanks. Angels, fairies, barricades, and scraps from my own life get redrawn in paint. Colors dull, edges warp, perspectives shift. Painting slows the image down and makes it stupidly physical. Confronting disappointment runs under my work like a low hum.
Painting becomes a place where image, memory, and belief lean on each other without quite lining up. A stubborn, unstable way of holding onto something, even as it threatens to disappear.
